Irish Climate Envoy Meets PI-CREF Chairman to Advance Clean Cooking and Carbon Financing Initiatives in Africa
Today, Friday May 17th, the Irish Climate Envoy, Sinead Walsh, paid a courtesy visit to her counterpart, PI-CREF’s Chairman, Kandeh Yumkella, at his state house office.
The meeting centered around the outcomes of the recent clean cooking summit in Paris, and support for the Clean Cooking Delivering Unit.
Madam Walsh and Dr. Yumkella brainstormed on the topic of Carbon Financing for Africa. They explored the appropriate timing and venues to start conversations on fair carbon pricing, and community rights to carbon credits. Dr. Yumkella briefed the envoy about ongoing work in the Ministries of Finance, and Environment and Climate Change on a Climate Change Act, regulations for a credible and transparent carbon trading system in the country. They agreed to collaborate at the global level to advance these issues in partnership with the growing community of climate envoys; highlighting the need for innovative financing mechanisms to support climate action on the African continent.
